Имеется в виду распространённый обычай, когда влюблённые молодые люди вытачивали ложки из дерева, чтобы преподнести их своим возлюбленным в подарок как символ приближающегося замужества. Выточенная деревянная ложка бедным деревенским влюблённым заменяла кольцо, которое дарили при помолвке.
